Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words “EAT ME” were beautifully marked in currants. “Well, I’ll eat it,” said Alice, “and if it makes me grow larger, I can reach the key; and if it makes me grow smaller, I can creep under the door: so either way I’ll get into the garden, and I don’t care which happens!”

– Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865)

As Alice, we wonder everyday whether or not each of our decisions will have any impact on the world. Especially, when they look so insignificant! We go to a little wonder shop around the corner, and buy shiny e-cakes that all ask to be devoured immediately… Unfortunately, as Alice soon learns during her adventures in Wonderland, there are always consequences to careless choices.

In a recent comment, following a great post on software life-cycle analysis, Olivier Philippot made four key observations that could help us better understand the consequences of our choices in the software industry. Here is my take on them:

The ever-growing needs in computer resources of new versions of software products is the main cause of the accelerated obsolescence of computer hardware, leading to an exponential increase in the quantity of toxic e-waste.

Therefore, it should be sufficient to progressively reduce the resource needs of new versions of software products to extend the effective lifespan of computer hardware.

Software publishers know how to reduce the resource needs of their software products: first, they avoid piling up unnecessary software layers on top of one another, and second, they compile their code.

However, many software publishers generally do not do it because developing quality software products makes less money than shipping poorly designed, hastily developed, resources-hungry bloatware. Of course, the benefit they make is a hidden cost for their customers, and hereafter the general public.

Let’s take an example: the PDF reader you use everyday. While delivering nearly the same user experience for twenty years, each new version of the well-known Adobe Reader becomes heavier on resources, whether Sumatra PDF, the brainchild of a small team of free software developers, is nearly achieving the features coverage of its illustrious competitor, but with a tiny footprint. Corporate responsibility, anyone?

Could it be possible to draw a path from this mundane software bloat problem to the world resource crisis? Among the many mottoes that make the Agile programmer‘s ethos, the YAGNI principle – “You ain’t gonna need it!” – is maybe the most radical because it clearly states that bloat, this hallmark of our consumption society, which has been driving product design, technology, decision-making and society as a whole, for nearly a century, is suddenly threatening everything.

Maybe the time has come to drop our unnecessary weights, renounce our quantity-obsessed demeanour, and instead focus on simple, meaningful stuff that matters the most?

Maybe the time has come for light things, that respect us and the world we live in.

2011 could one day be considered as the trigger of an historical strain on the very fabric of our civilisation. And 2012 could give us the first evidences of this change. When these evidences will accumulate over this decade, denial will no longer be an option.

Let’s welcome 2012 with hope. Let’s always bet on intelligence: with the right tools and a desire to build, we will create amazing things. Let’s get inspired by cosmic feelings and rejoice: life on Earth is worth celebrating! Let’s open our brains and our hearts till they encompass its grandeur.

We carry our responsibility as a newborn child, in our arms. Even those who refuse to face this fact have kids who are active on the Internet. Love will win them all.

“The principal source of injustice in our epoch is political approval for the existence of tools that by their very nature restrict to a very few the liberty to use them in an autonomous way. The pompous rituals by which each man is given a vote to choose between factions only cover up the fact that the imperialism of industrial tools is both arbitrary and growing. [...] This means that politics in a postindustrial society must be mainly concerned with the development of design criteria for tools rather than as now with the choice of production goals.”

– Ivan Illich, Tools for Conviviality (1973)

More than thirty-five years later, Illich’s visionary comment is today illustrated with a silent but growing controversy about smart meters and other mass surveillance systems deployed under governments auspices. A recent article by John Vidal from the Guardian, entitled Why smart meters could make power firms richer, made things even clearer. In fact, we know from the example of illustrious Web companies that collecting and using personal and behavioral information leads to very profitable businesses.

However, this point is not so commonly made in Europe, where huge amounts of money are going to be spent on smart meters without questioning the very design of these systems. In fact, detailed answers to several important questions are still missing: What is the business model of smart metering? That is, who will make money from it, to cover its costs? What kind of data will be collected, and shipped to whom?

Silence. Currently, deeply intrusive and weakly secured technology is about to be massively deployed without stating clearly its purpose. Industrialists are tiptoeing around the issues and apparently avoiding facing uncomfortable facts… Why real-time highly accurate individual data has to be transmitted outside homes if it is supposed to help people monitor their domestic energy consumption? Silence. Are all these details really needed to manage large-scale electricity networks? (It seems that aggregated data would do the job, doesn’t it?) Silence.

We live in strange times: the path towards sustainable development should be focusing on enlightened collective responsibility and individual autonomy, and sometimes we shiver when a dark cloud passes over the sun, casting its gigantic shadow on the ground.

“It is not the general idea that is implicated in opposition and combat, and that is exposed to danger. It remains in the background, untouched and uninjured. This may be called the cunning of reason, — that it sets the passions to work for itself, while that which develops its existence through such impulsion pays the penalty and suffers loss.”

– Georg Hegel, Lectures on the Philosophy of History (1837)

The Anonymous have decided to rampage the virtual land of Facebook on November 5th, promising to free its inhabitants from their merciless ruler(s). As a replacement to Facebook, they have announced the ongoing development of a social networking platform called Anonplus… This sounds definitely like an interesting challenge, at least for Facebook system administrators, but do the Anonymous really understand what is at stake?

Facebook, a perfect example of Hegel’s cunning of reason? In fact, it is through the megalomaniac whims of a young adult (or rather, a very old teenager) that Facebook came into existence, as a monstrous offspring of the first decade of the 21st century, and is now valued at nonsensical heights… It is now with the voices of more than 750 millions people that this social network resonates everyday, helping human beings all over the world make their pleas.

Individual consciousnesses, without wanting nor knowing it, are serving what transcends them, and through the actions of passionate individuals, reason becomes real, says Hegel. Therefore, if Facebook can be considered as a dictatorship, satisfying the egoistical desires of its main shareholder, it nevertheless contributes to the development of liberty, spreading revolutionary ideas across the entire planet, ignoring borders.

Facebook, icon of our Hegelian age? In the meantime, don’t forget to backup your list of Facebook friends using the great Export Friends To CSV application: who knows, the Anonymous’ coup d’état could succeed!

– Dante Alighieri, Divine comédie, chant I (vers 1300).

“So, from our perspective we look at this and it goes: look guys, here is what we want to do. We want to focus on three technologies, renewable, right, obviously, things we’ll have forever, and, by the way, we are not running out of it! The Sun’s not going away any time soon. You get the idea. What’s interesting by the vision: you look at those and when you compare them for example to nuclear, which in our model we simply assume as relatively constant, the nuclear cost, just on a cost basis, doesn’t cost out! And I’m ignoring the strategic questions, and the political arguments, and so forth. It’s just cheaper to invest. It’s funny because I was listening to one of these radio shows where he said: ‘well, these people say we should use wind and solar instead of nuclear!’… Yes! (Laughs) Because they’re cheaper! OK, it’s like money. (Laughs) OK, it’s like real simple.”

– Eric Schmidt, Where Would Google Drill?,
The Commonwealth Club of California,
San Francisco, October 1st, 2008.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster (the nuclear plant exploded at 01:23 on April 26th, 1986) and what do we see on Google’s front page, often dedicated to the celebration of noble causes? We see beautiful and rare (and extinct?) bird species, joyfully chirping! Oh yes, we nearly forgot this: let’s celebrate today the 226th birthday of our dear Jean-Jacques Audubon, the delicate painter, the unsung poet of the magnificence of our feathered friends!

This is… cute? But what happened to Google’s antinuclear stance, as clearly defined in 2008 by Eric Schmidt himself, then CEO of one of the most powerful high-tech companies in the world? His point was straightforward: nuclear power is rare and expensive, compared to abundant renewable energies. Who would seriously invest in this technology? And which insurance company would be foolish enough to cover the damages of a nuclear accident? (The cost of the Chernobyl disaster is estimated around 235G$.)

Answers to both questions are very simple: nuclear energy is a highly-subsidized industry, backed by governments themselves. And in case of trouble, citizens will pay the bill. It is very simple, isn’t it?
